The first Tuesday of every month, I’m going to try something new. It’ll be called Try it Tuesday, and this is the first one!
I have known I needed a hobby for years, but I haven’t found anything that interests me creatively and can be done long-term. For example, I like to craft, but there are lulls where nothing needs to be crafted. With a blog, there is always a new post I can write or settings I can tinker with! I have loved getting my blog set up and I am here to tell you that it is something you can do, too!
First things first..
If you have an idea of what you want to blog about, you’ll need something to call it! Your domain name is important because it is what your blog will come to be known by. You can be as specific as you want with your blog name, or you can deliberately leave it more open-ended. For instance, if you know for certain that you’ll always blog about your flower garden, you can call it Grandma’s Flower Garden. But if you are planning on writing about your garden amongst other topics, you can name it something like Grandma’s Garden of Life.
Once you have a name, you’ll need a website to put it on!
The host with the most!
I did a lot of research into blog hosting before starting my own blog, and everything I found pointed to WordPress on Bluehost as being the best. I went with Bluehost because it includes WordPress as its blogging platform and it cost WAY less than I thought it would to get started! Using my link will drop the price to less than $3 a month. I don’t know another hobby that is so cheap!
Without getting too serious, on free blogging platforms you do not “own” your work. With WordPress on Bluehost, everything is MY OWN. This was important to me because on another platform I could put all kinds of work into my blog for them to close and take it down, or worse, they take my work as their own because technically, it is!

Congratulations, you have a blog!
Now to zhuzh up the joint a little! You’ll need a fancy new theme. WordPress has lots of theme options built in, some are free and some are paid. I wanted to look a little different than everyone else starting out, so I decided not to use a built-in theme. I found lots of options on Etsy, and decided on one for about $25. The theme came with really straight-forward installation directions that even I could follow! My blog was up and running, looking perfecto in minutes!
I dragged my feet for months, toying with the idea of launching my blog. Now that it’s up and I’m having so much fun, I wish I’d started earlier! Don’t do the same! This is a big flashing sign: DO IT NOW!
